To the best of my knowledge, the author of this tale is one Gerard Hofnung, a now deceased British comedian of Hofnung's Interplanetary Music Festival fame, who related this tale in his famous "Oxford Union Debate" somewhere about 1958. His original telling is so deadpan as to be hilarious.
