Summary: I think I first heard this at least four/five years ago

Did the original come from Steve Martin years ago? It has all the
flavor of one of his jokes ("You're not //string//, are you?").

Why the hell are we seeing N repeats of it? Was it recently published
in Playboy's Party Jokes? Does someone at a site read it, tell it to
his friends, they think it's funny and then post it to net.jokes?
