I don't know about chalk dust being toxic, but many people (including me) have
a reasonably sever allergy to it, so if your kid is the allergic type it might
not be a hot idea.

An alternate might be a "whiteboard," the kind you write on with markers and
erase with a regular dry eraser.  This might lead to more wall-scrawling
problems with the markers though.
