The basic idea is to use escape sequences to redefine the characters from (decimal) 32 to 127 (optionally also from 128 to 255 in the 8-bit mode). The default interpretation for these characters is standard ASCII, but they can also be defined to be mosaic graphics, redefinable fonts, picture drawing instructions, or macros. The stuff the terminal sends back can be fairly complicated, particularly if unprotected fields are defined (a NAPLPS capability). Refer to the Service Reference Model (SRM) appendix in the standard.
