Apparently it didn't catch on. As to why they chose the 8088 instead of the 8086, Philip Estridge explained it in an interview a few years ago. At the time they had to start manufacturing, the 8086 was simply much more expensive, and they couldn't afford to use it in a product that would be able to sell at the price they wanted to charge.
