Extending Weitek Architecture David Hough ABSTRACT This paper contains personal opinions of the author which should not be assumed to be the posi- tion of any organization. The Motorola 68881 and Weitek 1164/1165 chips have become popular float- ing point implementations and represent different decisions about performance, complexity, and con- formance to the IEEE standard. Future chip sets in the Weitek style should incorporate some of the ideas that shaped the 68881.
