Message-ID: <646@unc.unc.UUCP> Date: Sun, 24-Nov-85 11:22:31 EST Article-I.D.: unc.646 Posted: Sun Nov 24 11:22:31 1985 Date-Received: Tue, 26-Nov-85 20:16:18 EST Distribution: net Organization: CS Dept, U. of N. Carolina, Chapel Hill Lines: 31 I use an Apple 1200 modem for communications between my Mac and our department's machines. From the first I experienced rare instances of what I assumed was phone line noise - random scramblings of characters lasting a second or two. No problem; exercise that ^L key. Recently however it has become much worse. It is particularly distressing when using the uw multi-window terminal emulator. It seems that the random characters sometimes match uw escape sequences with wild results: windows appear and disappear or my Mac locks up (no menu access, keyboard response) and needs to be rebooted. The problem is independent of Mac terminal program. Questions: - Does anyone else experience frequent noise? - Could this be a modem hardware problem or just really noisy phone lines? - Regarding uw: Has anyone else had trouble with it over phone lines? I don't have the RAM serial driver and I wasn't running uwtool. When uw is running smoothly it's a dream. The adm31 emulation is light years ahead of vt100 for UNIX emacs. I don't want to give it up!
