The October 1985 Issue has a most interesting article addressing exactly this topic (and which I ran into last night, playing "catch-up" ): see page 44, "ELECTRICAL MAC - PAL Technology Explained" by Jeff Mitchell. it explains the different technologies of PLDs (programmabable logic devices), in general, and the 6 HALs in the MAC in particular. lucky you asked about it today, tomorrow might have been too late already for my aging brain .....
