Most of them follow the same, standardized format for compressed files. They create binary files considerably smaller than the original files, and undoubtedly the C or Pascal versions could be easily converted for use on a Unix computer. Once the file is squeezed, it can be transmitted with an Xmodem or Kermit program. If you want to get some SQ and USQ programs for the PC, I suggest calling Gene Plantz's bulletin board in Chicago.
