At the moment I have data for about 20 sites. The data that we take consists of looking at people's .newsrc files to see which newsgroups they actually keep up to date on. BY FAR, by a HUGE HUGE margin, the most popular group over these 20 sites is net.jokes. Nothing else comes within a factor of 3.
