Bit of an oversimplification but not far from the truth: a few years ago there were around 600 million people in the world with British passports (I think); now they no longer have right of abode in Britain or 1st class British citizenship. The British Nationality Act of 1982 even took away the rights of the Falkland Islanders to come to Britain, until someone realised they had made a bloomer!! The French situation is not too different.
