Words that used to mean something are debased to valueless scraps of paper it's not even worth papering your walls with. I hate it when a modest technical advance like expert systems is hailed as the most revolutionary advance in software since the invention of the semicolon. I hate it when a mildly entertaining movie is called a 'riveting ... blockbuster'. I hate it when the word genocide is used to describe the fate of the Palestinians in the West Bank. And I hate it when the words love and friend are thrown around like used Kleenex. As I read in a comic strip somewhere, 'Friend? I'll tell you what it is a friend. When you're locked in with someone alone in a room with no food for a week, then you'll know what is a friend'. Now I don't go that far, but this constant use of 'love' recently has begun to make my molars ache. Love me? Sure, I love you. In fact, I love to love you. Etc. Come on folks, think for a minute. If you describe your feeling toward a stream of electrons as love, what are you going to use when you find someone you want to spend your life with? love love love? love ** omega? All this reminds me of that old poem: Love, I have heard, is a wonderful word; Hate, I have heard, is not. Love, I am told, is more precious than gold; Love, I have read, is hot. But hate to me is the verb that's superb and love but a drug on the mart. Any kiddie in school can love like a fool but hating, my boy, is an art.
