My experience is that you'll find what you expect. If you make a reasonable attempt to make yourself understood, French people will meet you more than halfway. Remember, in France as in most European countries, nearly everyone born since 1945 has studied English for several years. Further, I found the French to be warm and friendly and generally not anti-American. Now I know Americans who will argue both these points. These are the same Americans who resent French nationalistic feelings by French people but who feel that Americans should be more "patriotic!" I suppose they want the French to bow and scrape forever because of WW II, not realizing that we had our own axe to grind. Finally, I found proportionately more English-speaking folk in Paris than in the rural southwest, no doubt because Paris has a more international transient population.
