As part of the BIND package from Berkeley (contact <kjd@berkeley.arpa>
for a copy), there is a program called "test" that we call "nsquery"
(for the obvious reason that "test" is a shell builtin), which
allows you to build arbitrary domain server requests, and see the
full glory of the reply (which can often have lots of interesting
incidental information in it).
