I read it a couple of months ago, immediately after reading the sesqui-
centennial history of my home town (Dundee, IL).  It was fun to read GK's
slight warping of history, creating people who were more "normal" than
real people, but more interesting, too.  Comparing real and fictional
histories also made me appreciate GK's writing skill, though I think
it is very tuned to Lake Wobegone.  He had a story in the 10/27 New Yorker
set in Vermont, and it reads more like any other New Yorker short
story than like other GK work; the characters don't quite make it from
normal to interesting.  All in all, if you like PHC, you'll like LWD.
