While examining specs for CD players, I have observed that Magnavox samples at 4 times the normal rate, using a single laser. Many CD players sample at the normal rate, using multiple lasers. My questions: 1) Magnavox players are relatively inexpensive. Is one factor the reduced laser count? 2) Does the increased sampling rate increase the total time the laser is turned-on and thereby reduce laser lifetime? 3) Is the notion of sampling faster with a single laser better or worse than sampling slower with more lasers?
