  Anyone who has ever encountered the gonzo journalism of HST (and
anyone who hasn't for that matter) and is also interested in the
American political process has GOT to read "Fear and Loathing: on the
Campaign Trail '72", a lengthy beast about the several month period
running up to the 72 presidential election.  Thompson's hatred and
loathing for Nixon, Humphrey and a truckload of misfits knows no
bounds, and he refers in print to Nixon as "a cheapjack fascist and
lust-maddened werewolf".  Thompson says that one of the foulest blows
Nixon ever inflicted on him was leaving his name off the official
"enemies of the White House" list, something he vowed to make up for
with a vengeance.  The book is written from the point of view of
someone who knows that, once this gig is over, he doesn't have to
worry about how many enemies he's made, so everything and everyone is
fair game.  This is an awesome piece of literature; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
