   Is there anyway to make the mail routine in GNUMACS look through the
   .mailrc for aliases and other assorted goodies?
This happens in emacs 17, which is now being distributed.
(The only "goody" it hacks is the alias option -- though you are free
to modify it it do all the hairy and marginal other things you wish!)
