This is not easily apparent on minicomputers (or bigger) with either few people logged on or MANY people logged on. Since most people are on these types of systems, the authors have chosen to write it in such a way. Of course, they could have made all the party room monsters sleeping, but they didn't. In the 5.5 and 5.9 that I have played, versions written by the same author(s), there is no apparent slowdown. Also, how does it help you to know where a party room is? In the versions which I named above, I ALWAYS cast an 'a' spell (since I'm usually magician OR >16 int.) Finally, this is MUCH MORE APPARENT when in wizard's mode (of most versions), when it displayes every monster (in inverse video, too). hou2e!ksl Gandalf (I am in no way related to the author of rogue, nor does he work for me, nor do I work for him, nor do I work for the game, nor does the game work for me.)
