I tried going empty handed, nothing seemed to happen, so I walked around 
awhile, was amazed that I killed a Kesterel (0 ac and no weapon) and then 
got predictably tromped on by a Hobgoblin.

What do you mean by "the program corrupts itself"?

more: is there a typical way to get into the wizards mode on v. 5.3?
