Agreed, though it takes a very talented humorist to come up with really funny material. An example that immediately came to mind is the "Bloom County" comic strip in which Yaz Pistachio (a short lived character) complains about her unusual name. She says something to the effect of "CAn there be a worse name?" After a bit of thinking, one of the regulars responds "Berke Breathed." And she agrees. It is reprinted in one of the Bloom County anthologies. (the specifics escapes me because the book isn't near me - in fact it's ten miles away.) In this case, only those who pay attention to the strip (True fans) thinks it's outrageously funny. It fails to be funny when it has to be explained. This is therefore a poor attempt at meta-humor.
