The 7221A/B/C/S/T talk a unique escape-sequence language called "compact binary", designed for efficient data transfer on slow async lines. For the 7221C/T version (the "S" and "T" had roll-feed), there was (and may still be) a kit to convert it to HP-GL. Basically the kit converts the 7221 to a 7220 [HP-GL]. I don't know if the kit would work in a 7221B/S. I doubt if it would work in a 7221A.
