He plays a large piece of music, which appears above them. Lucy pulls it down and throws it over his head, around his neck, and says, "Pay attention to me!" One of my favorites is a very old "B.C." featuring the turtle (John?) and the bird. The turtle is walking at night with the bird standing on his back, and there's a crescent moon. In the next panel, the bird is hanging by its beak from the moon, the turtle is walking along oblivious to this, and the bird thinks, "It's good to know all the absurdity hasn't gone out of the comics." "...and he's done the definite article 'the' again!"
