I worked in the Image Processing Institute where the 'mandrill' was 
originally digitized. (It is part of their standard color image data
base.) And while it has been dissemenated to many people in many forms
it was originally digitized as a 512 X 512 image with 8 bits/color (
24 bits/pixel)
