I ordered the Atari 830 and telelink cartridge from Atari for $25. It arrived a few days ago, and I've tested it with an Atari and 850 interface, and a normal terminal--it works as advertised. 300 baud is kind of slow, but for the price, I'm not one to complain. About the modem: it's acoustic, 300 baud, brainless (you have to set switches for originate/answer, full and half duplex), has it's own power supply, and comes with a cable to connect the rs232 on the modem to the serial on an 850. The rs232 must be normal because I used a HP plotter cable to connect it to a wyse terminal, and had no problems. Rumor has it that the modem is a Novation in an Atari box.... I also got an hour of Compuserve, Dow Jones, and the Source free [doubt that I'll use them, though]. I'm not sure if Atari still has any, but for the price, it would be worth finding out (if you need a modem, of course). There was an 3 page ad in Analog about 2 months back. Hope somebody has some use for this.... BTW, allow a few extra weeks for delivery--they said about 6, and it took 8. Patrick Madden, at a dusty terminal in a dusty town in a dusty state.... And now with a dusty modem. !cmcl2!lanl!unmc!nmtvax!pickle | "And through the wire !ucbvax!unmvax!nmtvax!pickle | I see your face." PS: Thanx to Mr. Hartman for the modem tutorials, Fun Eddy for the 850 and manual, and Ray for the cable and implements of destruction.
