They seem to be quite good. They can be obtaineed through the Kinokuniya Book Stores in Los Angeles or San Francisco. I have seen another 2 vol. set - Beginning Japanese by Jorden which I think are good and they have tapes that go with them. (The tapes are expensive, though, and I understand the books are very intense grammar-wise).
