You can use either a plastic airline crate or a small metal cage. We have used both kinds and greatly prefer the metal variety: They are easier to keep clean and our dogs like to be able to see out. The size should be large enough for the dog to lie down comfortably; no larger. You are basically setting up a den for your dog (wild dogs are denning animals). There are many advantages of to using a crate: 1. No dog will voluntarily soil his den. If he does it's because he couldn't hold it. 2. You can take the crate with you when you travel. It will give the dog a familiar place to sleep. 3. Speaking of traveling, a crated dog is less likely to be injured (or run away) in a car accident. 4. It gives the dog a secure place to retreat to. Our dog regularly uses his crate as a place to sleep. And if you have kids, a good rule to lay down is that the dog not be disturbed when he is in the crate. -- +--------------------------------+ | uucp: decvax!linus!alliant!tj | +--------------------------------+ Bernese are mountains of love.
