The name of the movie is "Silent Running" which could be classified as 
a minor laid back classic of man's future development. Due to war and
conflict on earth, greenhouses have been placed in space where plants and 
small animals are kept alive for the repopulation of earth after it
becomes normalized. Due to cutback in funds, all greenhouses are told
to self destruct. Bruce Dern is the "hero" who will not allow his
greenhouse to be destroyed and ends up killing his fellow workers to
save it. The ending is rather weak as they are in most movies of the
gendre and draws no concrete conclusions other than war is bad and 
government is inept.
