Many people are defending it, pointing out how useful they find it. Others are worried about the high volume on the newsgroup and the high cost to transmit files on it. Since a similar group for amiga sources may spring up soon, there is concern about setting a precedent. There is also the issue of source vs binary, which I won't address here. Those calling for the removal of the newsgroup are probably making the assumption that the MAC users are few in number compared to the size of the network. If this is true, it would be more economical to have the MAC users directly connected. But it's not clear if what fraction of the net finds the mac groups useful. This message is a poll to find out that information. If you are a reader of net.sources.mac and wish to continue to receive it (or something similar, such as a moderated version) please reply to this message and say so. Also please include the name of the machine you read net.sources.mac on, in the following format: Machine: foovax This will allow a shell script to more easily process the replies. Only reply if you think net.sources.mac should continue. If you are the netnews administrator of one or more machines, please reply in any case. Please include either the line Useful: foovax or Useless: foovax in your message - Useless means you believe that nobody on your machine finds net.sources.mac useful; Useful means enough people on your machine find it useful to justify the resources your site spends on the newsgroup (phone bills, disk space, CPU time, private copies, whatever.) If you are the SA for more than one machine, you can include multiple lines in the reply, one for each machine. Of course, substitute your machine name for foovax; votes for the machine "foovax" will be discarded. If you are both the netnews administrator and a reader who likes the newsgroup, please reply twice, once wearing each hat. I will tally the results and report back to the net in a few weeks.
