The "franchise" simply never lived up to his potential. He was a tremendously talented defenceman but when a boneheaded play was made on the Jets' blueline, Babych was all too frequently responsible. The fans used to get on his case quite a bit. Worst of all, he never used his size to good advantage, something that irked Fergie. If Babych would throw his weight around, he would clear up some space in his own zone. When he rarely got into a fight, he almost always destroyed the opponent. Babych did come through on the offensive side and that is what the Jets will miss most. He is NOT their best defenseman. That title goes to Randy Carlyle, a fabulous replacement for Serge Savard. This trade was coming for a long time. gdburns%devvax@cornell.arpa
