I have also had trouble with Parisians being rude. In this particular
situation we were trying valiantly to communicate with them in French
(having had several years of french in high school and college) and they
were ignoring us like we *weren't even there*.  We found out later,
coincidentally, that they spoke English (quite well, actually) and just
*chose* to ignore our attempts in both French and English. I know the 
legends about the rude french are true!
