Apparently it was due to a Christmas episode being shot that had a racist (Ed Asner) telling several black and hispanic children that Santa didn't come for blacks and hispanics. CBS stopped the episode before shooting -- Ellison had written it -- and Ellison quit. I'm not a fan of Ellison the man; but I've always enjoyed his writing, and his TZ episodes this year have been fine. Also, this sounded like it would be a great episode (perhaps Asner would find out what Santa leaves racists? :-) -- no, that's not Ellison's style, though it has appeal). "And I heard Jeff exclaim, as they strolled out of sight, `Merry Christmas to all -- you take credit cards, right?'"
