Summary: re-appearing sidekicks (similarity of roles)

Last night I saw the George C. Scott version of Dickens' Christmas Carol,
and there, playing the young Scrooge, was Turlough.  It seemed that the
young Scrooge had some of the same nastiness that I hated in Turlough.

To forestall questions: I think that the Doc's sidekicks built up to Leela,
who was the greatest, and went downhill from there (with late Nyssa as a
short-term reversal of the slide).  K9 doesn't count; I like him anytime
John Leeson did the voice.

Is it my imagination, or did the BBC give the Doc younger sidekicks as a 
reaction to the age of the viewers?
