Salary:         Negotiable (starting salary range $30,084-$33,924 per annum)

Qualifications: - B.Sc. (M.Sc. preferred) in Computer Science or related field
                - 2-4 years experience with Unix system internals (some
                  experience with Lisp desirable)
                - evidence of management capability

Job Description:

The Laboratory for Computational Vision requires a System Manager for
its VAX 11/780 Unix 4.2BSD system (uucp: ubc-vision) and related
hardware.  The environment is a research oriented Laboratory within the
UBC Department of Computer Science with both formal and informal ties
to other research groups on campus and across the country.  The
research is in computational vision, artificial intelligence and
robotics with particular emphasis on applications to remote sensing.
Job duties are flexible and have evolved rapidly with the development
of the Laboratory.

Ongoing Responsibilities Are:

1. Management of the Laboratory's computation facilities.  The System
   Manager supervises day to day system administration and has
   responsibility for the purchase, installation, maintenance and
   upgrade of the Laboratory's hardware and software.  The System
   Manager has primary responsibility for system software.  Secondary
   support for research projects involving faculty, technical staff and
   graduate students also is provided.

2. Expertise in Unix.  The System Manager keeps up to date on
   developments in the Unix community.   The System Manager advises the
   Laboratory's Management Committee on hardware and software
   acquisition.  The System Manager works with colleagues in the
   Department of Computer Science to develop common Unix facilities.
   The System manager acts as a liaison with the Computing Centre and
   other departments regarding Unix development campus-wide.

3. User assistance.  The System Manager provides consultation to users
   of the research facility.  The user community consists of faculty,
   technical staff and graduate students affiliated with the UBC
   Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Remote Sensing.  Departments
   represented include Forestry, Computer Science, Geography,
   Oceanography, Geophysics and Astronomy,  Soil Science, Electrical
   Engineering and Civil Engineering.

4. Networking.  The System Manager supports the Laboratory's role in
   networking and communications.  The VAX 11/780 is the UUCP gateway
   for UBC and the MAILNET gateway for local hosts and for CDNNET.  It
   also is the local USENET news distribution host.

The Immediate Task Is:

5. Conversion to Unix 4.3BSD on a common ethernet local area network.
   (The Laboratory's ethernet currently includes a VAX 11/780 and a
   SUN-2.   At present,  ten other departmental machines also are
   connected. The Laboratory expects to add SUN-3's and a Lisp machine
   in the coming year.)  Our software environment includes both C and
   Lisp programs using a standard image file representation.  Image
   hardware supported includes a Raster Technologies Model One/25 image
   display system, an Optronics C-4500 colour film scanner/writer and a
   Matrox frame grabber/buffer with attached Hitachi CCD camera.
