My big beef with airbags: what good are they in multiple collisions?

Sure, I rearend somebody at a stop or in a panic stop, the bag does
it's job.  What if I sideswipe another car and go off the road (WHAT??
MY FAULT????  NEVER!!!!)  The bag may fire on the first colision,
but there would be no protection for any following collisions.  

It would be interesting to see what the percentage of collisions were
1 impact as opposed to multiple impact.
