Your suggestion about listening to books on tape during a commute is a
good one that I have been planning to follow.  Meanwhile, I learned
enough French to 'get by' in Paris via a Berlitz tape.

You might check your local public library for tapes.  I have seen most
of the titles mentioned in the referenced note there.
