Actually, I believe (i.e., I remember reading somewhere) that the term "grog" is an abbreviation for the name "Grogram", and that this Grogram character was distinguished in this way by the sailors of the RN because he figured out that you could save money by watering down the rum you handed out. So, if I'm right, the last sentence quoted above is exactly backwards!
