It alternates between the two until it sees something it understands. This sounds a bit dubious but seems to work all right in practice. For a couple of years most of utzoo's links to the outside world worked that way (3451PAs calling sites with 212-only modems). (I speak in past tense because we're running 2400PAs now.) Are you sure you're allowing enough time for the connection to complete? The alternation can be a bit slow, and I believe it tries VA3400 first, so a fast timeout could explain the problem. We once had trouble with this on Long Distance calls, where the completion of the connection took a noticeable amount of time, until we added a couple of 'k's on the end of the phone number to make the thing a little more patient. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry
