I did meet a ghost on level 6, but he finally > left me alone. If you haven't noticed by now, hack keeps track of the goings-on when there are several players in the dungeon. If another player had aggravated a shopkeeper, and say teleported the sucker away, then that shopkeeper might wander around looking for any "@"'s to kill (ie. YOU). Just part of the fun! It's a neat feature, despite this. Last night I found the remains of a pretty hefty Wizard who'd been killed. After I lost his ghost in the bushes, and blasted away the moster that had killed the poor bloke, I collected all his treasures (they were in a pile on the ground).
