Based on a similar experience that happened to me, I'd say that you were on
a ghost level. It would appear that, while alive, the ghost raided a shop
and escaped, forcing the shopkeeper to follow him out. It would also appear
that at the time of death, the would-be ghost must have been wearing a ring
of conflict. (The affected shopkeeper seems to retain his fellings of
conflict into the next life.
