You don't want to pick it up -- you want to 'm'ove onto it and 'e'at it.
Make sure you have poison resistance (you probably do or it's unlikely that
you'd have gotten as far down as where the Dragons are), and make sure you're
not satiated. Many's the time I've gotten so excited about having finally
killed a creature that will give me the special capability I need that I
hop right over and eat without first checking -- "You choke over your food..."
