I like playing the Valkyrie, she has a lot of versatility... I suspect that the designers figured that game players would balk at playing a "girl" so made her to be a ringer. anyway I noticed that in some lower levels there are areas of wall that have a slightly different color to them .. you have to shoot (or whack) at them a few times and they open up a single space doorway. Is this the kind of thing that you are talking about.. Also the instructions tell you that you can't kill death by anything but magic but if you shoot him enough times he will die! I think that Atari has come up with one hell of a winner in this game. There hasn't been a video game in the last two years that stirred my urges to convert my cash holdings to quarters like this one does. I had gone back to pinball's (check out "Comet" by willliams.. probably the BEST pinball ever!!! If atari puts Gauntlet out on the 520 (or its clones) that will settle it for me.
