Jan. 2, page 1 Escapade in ambulance foiled by emergency call The Globe And Mail ------------------ A stolen ambulance was retrieved by Peel Regional Police yesterday when the thief responded to an emergency call -- and returned it to the same house she had taken it from. The case of the missing ambulance started in Brampton, Ont., when the driver and attendant emerged from a house with a patient on a stretcher only to find their vehicle had been stolen. The driver called police to report the theft, then phoned for a replacement ambulance to pick up the patient. Meanwhile, the person who had stolen the ambulance was driving around Brampton, attempting to respond to another emergency call for an ambulance. Police said she was having difficulty finding the street when the dispatcher called for the replacement. She decided to respond because she did not realize that it was the same address from which she had taken the ambulance. Police were sitting in a cruiser calling in a description of the stolen vehicle when it pulled into the driveway. A 61-year-old woman was charged with theft valued at more than $200. She was taken to Peel Memorial Hospital for observation.
