The way I understand the story, someone asked the writer (I use the term loosely) what the name of the song was. He said "In the Garden of Eden," but because of his condition (blown away on controlled substances--LSD or something) it came out "In-a-gadda-da-vida," and everyone was so amused by this (or something) that they decided to use that as the title instead.
