Lines: 37 Summary: The beginning of a rather silly story. PROLOGUE Long ago, when bold explorers sailed the seas in wooden ships in search of new lands, one of them, not the boldest but up there with them, was the famous adventurer Haiwatha. In his ship, the "Hoptoad," he sailed the seas and waved at everyone he saw. One day, Haiwatha made a startling discovery! He had been dozing at the helm again, and was awakened by a jarring crunch as the ship ran aground on an island. He named the island Minnehaha. Unfortunately the "Hoptoad" had been badly damaged in the collision, and so Hiawatha was forced to remain on the island, subsisting primarily on greasy hamburgers which he bought at a fast-food restaurant, for several months, until he was rescued by a shipload of Tyrolean merchant princes on their way to Bhopal. But had Hiawatha known of their sinister plan, he would probably have fled, for once at sea these villainous noblemen tied him to the mast and made him listen to them sing ballads. However, clever Hiawatha managed to steal a lute string, and late that night he used it to saw through his bonds. Then, taking a brightly colored lifeboat and sufficient supplies of fig newtons and ale to see him through to Hong Kong, he set off without even a parrot for company. Upon reaching Hong Kong, Hiawatha wrote a book about his adventures entitled, "Fig Newtons and Small Islands: An East Indies Diary." The book was an instant bestseller, and Hiawatha retired from the explorer biz and bought a large house with three marble pillars all the way up the front and a statue of a dachsch dauc dacshu a small dog in the front room.
