Both were accomplished musicians, and spent many happy hours playing duets. One day, as they were engaged in a jam session with some flounder, the entire company was consumed by a passing whale. Louie the Lobster, renowned throughout the seaworld for his honesty and virtue, was immediately transported to heaven. Saint Peter met him at the Pearly Gates, issued him wings and a golden harp, and invited Louie to play with the Celestial Choir. His old friend, Sam, was less fortunate. A lifetime of sin reaped its reward: Sam the Clam was cast into hell. Louie the Lobster was an accomplished musician, and played the harp so beautifully, he was soon God's favorite. Time passed, and Louie came to miss his old friend, Sam. One day God passed by, and enquired as to the source of Louie's unhappiness. "I miss my old friend, Sam the Clam," said Louie. "You may visit your friend for one day," said God; "but be sure you return before the Pearly Gates close at midnight." Louie was overjoyed; stopping only to pick up his harp, he hurried down to hell. Upon entering, he saw a large neon sign over a nightclub, reading: "SAM THE CLAM'S DISCOTHEQUE". Louie stepped inside, and discovered his old friend Sam leading a rock and roll band. When Sam saw Louie, he clapped him on the back, and invited him to join the band to play that evening. Louie lost all track of time, as he and Sam played all their old favorites. Suddenly a bell began to strike midnight, and Louie remembered God's admonishment to be inside the Pearly Gates before they closed. He said goodby to Sam, and rushed back to Heaven. Louie the Lobster squeaked through the gates at the stroke of midnight, just as they were closing. Saint Peter looked at him and said, "You left with your harp. Where is it now?" Louie replied, "Oh, I left my harp in Sam Clam's Disco!" ***************************************************************** Standard Disclaimer. jon maybell nsc-pdc!jon
