We faced a similar problem with our 7300 when it first arrived.  The
unit was sitting around in some wharehouse waiting for AT&T to release
it into the market.  The battery ran low and eventually died - and yes,
we had to replace the motherboard!  (I don't know why they just didn't
leave the battery so the user could change it).
