I have the same problem with having lingering locks files. I am 
also finding some groups are being 'CLOSED' for some reason.

I've been seeing this also.  Inspecting the code shows that it must
be some type of race condition between nfarchive and nfrcv (or newsinput).
I suspect nfarchive failing before it re-opens the topic but can't confirm
that.
