     In Norfolk, Va. in the very early 50s -

         out     oot
         boot    but
         salad   gerns
         roof    ruf
         root    rut
         route   rut
         house   hoose
         mouse   moose  (There's moose in the hoose! Get it
oot!)
     Being a native Manhattanite, it took a while before I
could make sense out of the accent. Also, a fire engine
became a fahrnjn.

      Then of course there's the Down East proununciations:
       
             park    pack
             car     caar
             smart   smaat
