Arfken (2nd ed.) eqn (4.201) gives a general form for a matrix representation
of an SU(2) group element (ie, a 2x2 matrix, whose elements are of the form:
exp(ix)cos(w) ).  Does anyone know (or know of a reference containing) a 
similar form for SU(3) ?  Or a tractable derivation (I haven't given up
working it out myself yet) ?  I assume these forms are not unique.
